People In The Square
Just
who makes it all happen at Square One?
The
following talented professionals thoroughly enjoy the challenge
of making Square One the best independent publishing house in the
country:
Rudy
Shur, the company's founder and publisher, began
his work in publishing as a field representative for Charles E.
Merrill Publishing Company and William C. Brown Publishing Company,
where he ranked as a top salesman in each sales force. In 1976,
Mr. Shur and his partners founded Avery Publishing Group. Over time,
Avery was developed into a successful mid-size firm, achieving market
dominance in the field of alternative health books. In 1999, Avery
was sold to Penguin Putnam Inc.
Square
One Publishers began as a dream of Mr. Shur, who is enjoying the
opportunity to once again achieve success in the publishing arena.
To quote Mr. Shur, "After over twenty years of publishing, I find
myself back at square one. It was a wonderful journey. However,
now that I am back to the place I started, I know the place for
the first time. And I can't think of a better place to be."
Joanne Abrams,
the company's executive editor, has had a long and successful
career in book editing. Having spent over twenty years at Avery
Publishing Group, she is highly competent in all phases of the editorial
process, from project development to copyediting to copywriting.
Ms. Abrams is also the coauthor of the Kitchen Quickies Cookbook.
Marie Caratozzolo, the company's senior editor, is
a seasoned book editor with over ten years' experience in trade
books. At Avery Publishing, Ms. Caratozzolo worked on a variety
of books from manuscript development to finalized copy. She is also
the coauthor of the Kitchen Quickies Cookbook.
Robert Love, the company's manager of operations,
brings with him considerable management skills. For over twenty
years, Mr. Love was the owner of a successful New York-based catering
operation, where he oversaw all phases of the operation. At Square
One, Mr. Love is responsible for bookkeeping, office management,
order fulfillment, and inventory management.
Anthony Pomes, who is Director of Publicity
and Marketing at Square One Publishers, previously worked for over
two years as Publicity Manager for Penguin Putnam Books for Young
Readers. He has worked in book publishing for more than a decade
in a variety of roles, from editor and typesetter to publicist and
rights director. (He's even pitched children's books live on national
TV!) During his time at Avery Publishing Group, he had the distinction
of securing the company's most lucrative rights deals and also being
the only employee in Avery history to get locked inside the company
building after hours.
Jeannie
Tudor, our art director, joined the company right
after graduating with high honors in Graphic Design from Adelphi
University. Prior to working at Square One, she honed her graphic
design skills and all-around business chutzpah while working for
the Ethan Allen Corp. At home she divides her time between an ongoing
fascination with Buffy the Vampire Slayer DVDs and Will Ferrell
flicks.
Gary Rosenberg, who is responsible for the company's
typesetting and website maintenance, has had over twenty-five years'
experience in the typesetting, graphic arts, and educational publishing
fields. He has worked at a range of companies in New York City and
on Long Island; most recently at Avery Publishing Group in Garden
City Park. He now works freelance from his home in Boca Raton, Florida.
Ariel Colletti, our Special Projects Editor, graduated
from the State University at Albany with an honors degree in English.
After dabbling in the unrelated fields of retail and banking, she
is thrilled to have found her niche here at Square One. Ariel is
a rock 'n' roll enthusiast and passionate about good fiction.
Ken Kaiman, our consulting director of sales, has had both
a distinguished and successful career in book sales. He has headed
the book sales division of World Wide Media, one of this country's
largest international book distributors. He has also been Vice President
of Sales at Como Books managing and coordinating a national sales
force of twenty. He currently runs Athena Productions, a consulting
and management firm specializing in book marketing and sales.
