From 1896 through 1900, monthly sets of four
lithographic plates were produced from the work of the world's best
poster artists. These collectible sets, known as Maîtres de l'Affiche,
were then mailed to subscribers. In this newly expanded edition,
Alain Weill--a renowned authority on posters of the Golden Age--has
added posters produced through 1914. By incorporating these later
years, Weill has made the book more inclusive of other countries
and artists, many of whom did not produce their best posters until
after the turn of the century. The result is a beautiful, all-encompassing
poster book. Divided into an entertaining variety of topics, including
artists, subjects, and countries, it offers some of the world's
best known and finest images. It also provides notes that describe
the history of the poster as an art form.
Alain
Weill is an internationally recognized art expert and writer.
He specializes in the sale of graphic artworks. Mr. Weill holds
a master's degree in law. He was the curator at the Library of Decorative
Arts, and then at the Poster Museum in Paris. He also served as
director of the Museum of Advertising in Paris. Alain Weill is the
author of over eighteen books on art, both classic and contemporary,
and classic advertising posters.
