Synopsis

Contrary to traditional belief, the transition from diaper to potty can be started even before your child’s first birthday--and be fully completed by the second! Katie Warren advises taking advantage of the early months--when babies do most of their communicating on an emotional level. For children understand things intuitively much sooner than they understand words or actions.

The author stresses the importance of a friendly, positive environment--one that lovingly encourages a child’s performance on the potty. For a child responds much better to a parent’s smiles, laughter, and enthusiastic support than to fear and coercion. If such an atmosphere prevails whenever children are on their potties--and they are made to feel happy and proud each time they are successful in their training--then they will repeat these performances just to get that same, happy response from their parents. This is the underlying principle of Katie’s method.

Potty Training Your Baby includes information on everything from where to buy a potty to dealing with those inevitable little "accidents." The material is presented in a down-to-earth fashion, and is enhanced by personal flashbacks from the author’s own parenting experience. Perhaps most importantly, the book shows you how to turn this often dreaded and frustrating task into a time of mutual growth and learning for both you and your child.

Katie Warren, mother of three, draws from the potty training method handed down to her through three generations of her family. Based upon a common-sense approach and a loving environment, Katie has successfully taught her family’s technique to many mothers and fathers. She has written this book to give other new parents the opportunity to share her toilet training expertise. Katie manages to keep up with her interests in psychology and writing. She resides with her husband and children in San Marcos, Texas.

Introduction

As a young mother, I never quite understood how potty training could become such a hair-raising experience for parents. Unlike most people I know, all the children in my family were out of diapers before their second birthday. It was something we just did. The women in my family had, for generations, potty trained their babies early. Each generation passing to the next stories that emphasized a light-hearted approach to training. These stories contained a wealth of information. As a result, we just didn’t have the problems that seem common in so many families.

After reading everything I could find about the subject and considering the advice offered by many doctors, I began to understand why problems develop. There is a general lack of information on the subject. Most of what parents find to read provides outmoded information that is too general and leaves many important questions unanswered. For example, if a two year old refuses to participate, does it mean he’s not ready to be trained? Or does it mean you’re going about it the wrong way? Could it just be the child’s way of expressing his independence? If a one year old pees on the potty whenever he’s placed there and seldom wets his diaper, does mean he’s potty trained, or does he have potty-trained parents? Questions such as these create uncertainty for parents. Under the circumstances, even the most rational and intelligent parents can become unglued. It’s little wonder that problems develop.

I believe potty training is more of a philosophy than a specific, stepby- step technique. This book presents some new thinking and general guidelines which will help you to potty train your child with minimal stress. With an early start, my method enables you to finish training by the time a lot of parents are just beginning; by the age of one and a half to two years. But regardless of your child’s age when you begin, the technique is much the same.

Ultimately, every baby will be potty trained. Every baby wants to be potty trained; it’s human nature to strive for accomplishment and independence. The baby that is trained early is the one who receives complete support, encouragement, and acceptance from his parents as training progresses. Potty training then becomes a rewarding, bonding experience for both you and you child, which is the way it was meant to be.
