Shudder/AMC+'s "SLASHER" Series Puts "JACK THE RIPPER" Front & Center . . . But Our Authors Know His True Identity
Posted: 2023/04/03
GARDEN CITY PARK, NY: It remains a fact that True Crime has captured in recent years the imagination of millions of people worldwide. The most recent exploration of this genre now appears with the new season of the popular Shudder/AMC+ horror streaming series SLASHER, whose fifth season debuts on April 6, 2023.
The title of this new season is "RIPPER"—and as you may have guessed (click here for the trailer), the story is set in late 19th century London when the still-unidentified "Jack the Ripper" first made headlines.
Although this series has taken its own unique approach to the Ripper murders, it just so happens that Square One has a title on this topic that remains one of the most controversial to have ever been published.
That book is The Strange Case of Dr. Doyle: A Journey into Madness & Mayhem by son/father authors and medical doctors Daniel Friedman and Eugene Friedman.
This book—which suggests that the infamous “Jack the Ripper” and famous Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle were the same man—is now available in both its original hardcover format ($29.95 USD, ISBN: 978-0-7570-0348-6 ) and also the revised 2019 trade paperback edition ($17.95 USD, ISBN: 978-0-7570-0431-5), which features some excellent new artwork from famed comic book artist John Romita, Jr.).
The Friedmans have defended their unorthodox theory on the Travel Channel’s popular investigative show America Unearthed hosted by Scott Wolter—and world-renowned Ripperologist expert Paul Begg has declared the Friedmans’ book “a gripping and fascinating read.” Here’s what others have said about The Strange Case of Dr. Doyle: “A spectacular undertaking.” —The Durango Herald “Engaging . . . bound to be read by fans of Victorian murder.” —Library Journal “Extremely insightful, and well researched . . . illuminating.” —Detective Mystery Stories “Allows us to peek inside the mind of Arthur Conan Doyle.” —Booklist
“[R]aise[s] intriguing questions and possibilities.” —Kirkus Reviews COMING SOON: During the Fall 2023 publishing season, be on the lookout for a new hardcover title from the Friedmans titled Doyle's World—Lost & Found: The Unknown Histories of Sherlock Holmes and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle ($24.95 USD, ISBN: 978-0-7570-0448-3), and its chief focus will land on the remarkable ways in which Doyle wove the facts of his life within the fabric of his fiction (among his various other works). Square One titles are available through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop.org, and wherever else books are sold. (If they sell books, they can get this one for you.) Within the trade, our titles are available through Ingram, Baker & Taylor, Follett, and Brodart among other distributors. Or you can order from Square One directly by calling 516-535-2010.
